Move In Cleaning Check List

Aug 09, 2019

Young couple cleaning and selecting things

Moving day has finally arrived and you are super excited about your new place. Whether you are going to be living in a previously occupied property or new construction, doing a thorough cleaning of the entire place will make you feel great about settling into your new digs. But where to start? Upon arriving at your new residence, it can be overwhelming to try to figure out the best way to tackle your official move in cleaning project.

Here are some great tips on how to get yourself organized and do a spectacular job getting the major rooms of your new home super clean. Be sure to get all the supplies you will need for each room and don’t forget to wear protective gloves, especially when handling cleaning products.

Bathroom

Most people agree that the bathroom is probably the most important room that you will want to clean. Try to do this early on moving day, as you will probably want to take a relaxing shower or bath after the movers leave.

  • Exhaust Fans – These typically are covered with dust and dirt, even in new homes. The air in your house will be much cleaner as a result of this simple task. In addition, clean exhaust fans will allow more moisture to exit the bathroom after shower or baths are taken.
  • Toilet Seats & Covers – Frankly, nobody wants to use the toilet seats and covers from the previous owner. In addition, these items are hard to get 100% clean, so save time and energy by purchasing new ones. They are not that expensive and you will have the peace of mind to know that they are in perfect condition.
  • Bathtub or Shower – The bathing area of a bathroom is very personal, so it is important that it is clean and mildew free. Use a strong bleach based cleaner to sanitize it. Be sure to open the bathroom window, as the smell of these cleaners can be intense.
  • Sink & Floor – Give the sink and floor a good scrubbing, in the same way that you cleaned the shower or bath area.

Bedroom

  • The Windows – Nothing says good morning to a new day like clean windows to look through. Dirt free windows can increase the light that comes into your room, as well as giving you an enjoyable view of gardens and backyards.
  • Light Fixtures & Ceiling Fans – These objects can accumulate a lot of dirt and dust that not only looks bad, but can also aggravate allergies for many people.  Instead of spreading the dirt all over the room by dusting, use a vacuum cleaner on lights and fans to capture the dirt at its source.
  • Vacuum The Floor Or Carpet – Before all the heavy furniture goes into the bedroom, do a thorough vacuuming of either the carpet or hard wood floor. It will be a great feeling to know that there aren’t any dust bunnies from the previous owner living behind your bed or dresser.

Kitchen

The kitchen is one of the most important rooms of your new home. Cleaning it before all the appliances are installed will help a great deal in your efforts.

  • The Fridge – If are inheriting a fridge upon moving in, be sure it is spotless before you put any food it. Remove all of the shelves and drawers and soak them in a mild cleaning solution. Clean the inside of the fridge with a disinfectant product to remove any stains or spills. Once you load all of the pieces back in, put a small box of baking soda on the top shelf to ensure that the fridge continues to smell good.
  • Counters, Cabinets & Drawers – A good scrubbing while they are empty will allow you to clean them much better, as compared to when they are full of stuff. Look for stains or sticky spots. A good mild cleaner will do the trick in these areas.
  • Stove – Even if you bring your own stove with you, degrease it before you unpack the kitchen. Disinfect the top and be sure that all of the knobs are clean and dirt free. If the burner covers and the trays under them are greasy, put them in the sink in warm, soapy water.

Congratulations on your new home! By following these simple cleaning tips, you will enjoy it even more!

Happy Cleaning!
