Doing Everything They Can to Make Your Move Easy

To many of us, moving is one of life’s most stressful events. It’s right up there with holiday chaos, getting patted down by airport security, or sitting through a meeting where everyone talks but nothing gets decided.

But let’s focus on some good news: there are ways to make moving easier. While I can’t help with the airport or your in-laws, I can help you simplify the headache of changing your address.

California-Specific Steps You Shouldn’t Skip

If you’re moving within or to California, there are a few important address updates you’ll need to handle:

DMV Change of Address

  • California requires you to update your driver’s license and vehicle registration within 10 days of moving.
  • You can do this online, by mail, or in person at the DMV.
  • Keep your old and new addresses, license plate number, and driver’s license number handy.
  • Note: You won’t automatically get a new license or registration card—you’ll need to request replacements if you want your new address printed.

Voter Registration

  • Make sure your voter registration reflects your new address. California allows same-day voter registration, but updating early helps avoid issues at the polls.

Mail Forwarding

  • File a change of address with the USPS to forward your mail. Standard forwarding covers most mail for one year, giving you time to update all your accounts.

Utilities and Services

  • Contact your gas, electric, water, and internet providers to transfer service. Many California utility companies allow you to schedule shutoff at the old address and start service at the new one on the same day.

Other Important Updates

  • Notify your employer, banks, credit card companies, insurance providers, and the California Franchise Tax Board.

Oakley Relocation + Updater = Less Stress

Oakley Relocation, an agent of North American Van Lines, provides moving services for any kind of relocation, whether localnational or international.  They provide a solution that is all-inclusive, with short and long term storage, full-service packing, un-packing and crating, vehicle transport, and a small shipment program that ships anything, anywhere.

As part of their effort to make the moving process as smooth and organized as possible, and to meet every customer need, they recently partnered with Updater, a company with a mission to “build technology so powerful that people won’t move without it.”

Updater Moving App

Updater is a single platform that greatly reduces the amount of time you have to spend contacting all of the accounts, utilities, and other things, such as your mail, that need to be updated when you move.  Instead of contacting each of those entities individually, which can take hours, Updater reduces those hours into minutes. So on the day you move into your new home, you can rest easy that your Wi-Fi will be set up, utilities connected, and satellite, cable, or streaming will be all ready for you after you unpack the necessities. In addition, you will also receive discounts for preferred vendors, exclusive to Updater.

Utilizing the Updater platform typically saves you:

  • 9 hours
  • $500 in exclusive discounts
  • 21 less calls/emails to vendors
  • Having at least one, if not more, pounding headaches during your move

Oakley’s partnership with Updater is yet another way they streamline the logistics of moving in order to make your move as stress-free as possible. Give them a call today and get all of your questions answered and learn more about the Updater platform.
