Moving in La Jolla, From the Village to Mount Soledad
There isn't a parking meter on the Village streets; posted limits run from 30 minutes to a few hours instead, and open curb goes fast. Up on Mount Soledad, some streets are too steep or tight for a big truck, and the condo buildings near the Cove keep their own move rules. So most La Jolla planning comes down to one question: where can the truck legally stand, and how far is that from your front door?

Where the Truck Can Stand
- The Village. Curb space on Prospect Street and Girard Avenue is scarce and time-limited, so we choose the truck's spot, and how long it can stay, before the crew shows up.
- Mount Soledad and the Muirlands. Some streets, like Hillside Drive off Torrey Pines Road, are signed against large trucks, and a steep driveway or stairs down to the front door add carrying time. A smaller shuttle truck is often the better call up here.
- Bird Rock. La Jolla Boulevard runs through a string of roundabouts, so we plan the truck's approach and look for room on the side streets.
- La Jolla Shores. The streets are flatter, but summer weekends fill the curbs near Kellogg Park, which makes a weekday move easier on everyone.
Condo Buildings and HOA Rules
A condo move starts with the building: an elevator reservation, set move hours and the mover's insurance certificate in the manager's hands before the crew walks in. Our condo and apartment movers send the certificate ahead, pad the elevator walls and lay runners down the hallway. Moving between two buildings? We line up both sets of rules so the truck isn't stuck waiting on either one.
UC San Diego and Moves Out of State
UC San Diego's academic year brings faculty, postdocs and visiting researchers in and out of La Jolla, often from another state or country. A long distance move goes by how much the shipment weighs and how far it travels, not the hours. If you're crossing an ocean, start with our international moving page.
Pricing a Move Around Hills and Parking
Local moves run on an hourly rate that covers the crew and truck, which is why access sets the price: the walk from the truck, the stairs or the wait for the elevator, and whether a shuttle is needed. Summer weekends near the beach can add time, too. You can book a free visit from a Relocation Consultant or give an Inside Sales Representative a video tour from your phone; both end with an estimate on paper. The office at 1.858.360.1569 can tell you the current hourly rate.
La Jolla Moving FAQ
How strict is parking in La Jolla?
Strict enough to plan around. Village spaces carry posted time limits, and a truck parked past them or across a driveway can be ticketed, so we settle where it will stand ahead of time. On the hillside streets the problem is usually room, not signs.
Can you move a piano down a steep outdoor staircase?
Usually, yes. For piano moving on stairs, an upright goes on a padded dolly and a grand is taken off its legs and strapped to a board; we look at the stairs, the turns and the landing during the estimate so the right size crew shows up.
