Moving an Estate in Rancho Santa Fe
Outside the village center, the Covenant has no streetlights or sidewalks, and many Rancho Santa Fe homes sit at the end of a private road or behind a guard gate. On an estate move, that shapes the day more than the size of the house does. Before anything gets packed, we work out how the truck reaches the house, where it can turn and which pieces need a crate. We're based in San Marcos, a short drive away, so an extra walk-through or a separate packing day is easy to fit in.

Gate Lists and Long Private Drives
Fairbanks Ranch keeps a 24-hour guard gate, and The Crosby is guard-gated with private streets, so the guard house gets the names of the crew and the truck's details a few days early, along with the move hours your HOA allows. Long private drives are the other puzzle. If the big truck can't make the grade or the turn, it stays at the road and a smaller shuttle truck ferries loads up to the house. Inside, runners go down over stone and wood floors, and door jambs and stair rails get padded before any furniture leaves its room.
The Barn, the Tack Room and the Garage
If the property has horses, they'll travel with a livestock hauler, but the barn is ours to pack. Saddles, bridles and blankets are wrapped and labeled by horse, tack trunks are padded, and barn tools ride together in their own section of the truck. List the garage too: gym equipment, a gun safe or a wine refrigerator belongs on the estimate, not on a moving-day surprise list.
Crates for Art, Antiques and Wine
Paintings, mirrors, marble tops and antiques go into custom crates or fitted cartons, each one marked for its new room. Wine is packed in divided cartons and rides at the tail of the truck, last on and first off, so it isn't sitting through a hot summer afternoon. A grand piano comes off its legs onto a padded board. For paintings and sculpture, our fine art moving guide goes into how we pack and crate them.
What Sets the Hours on an Estate Move
- The shuttle. Running loads up a long drive in a smaller truck takes extra time, so we decide during the walk-through whether you need one.
- Crating. Every crate is built around its piece, and a house full of art takes longer to pack than a house full of books.
- Outbuildings. A guest house, barn, tack room or pool house is counted room by room, the same as the main house.
- Daylight. With no streetlights on Covenant roads, we want the truck loaded before dark, which means an earlier start in winter.
Rancho Santa Fe Moving Questions
What does an estate move in Rancho Santa Fe cost?
An estate here is quoted on time, not square footage. A move within the county runs on an hourly rate, with the crew and the truck on the clock together, so the shuttle, the crating and the outbuildings set the total. A Relocation Consultant walks the whole property with you at no charge and puts the estimate on paper, and the office can give you today's hourly rate at 1.858.360.1569. Leaving the state? That move is figured on weight and mileage, and a binding estimate locks the number: only added items or services, a changed delivery address or a moved load date can change it.
Is mail delivered to homes in the Covenant?
No. There's no home mail delivery inside the Covenant; residents pick up their mail from P.O. boxes at the Rancho Santa Fe post office. Rent the box and file your forwarding order before moving day so nothing gets sent back.
