What to Pack First When Moving

After you’ve made the decision to move, it’s important to come up with an organized plan that takes into account all of your belongings that you’ll have to pack for the big move. Packing up the items in your home is something you should not wait until the last minute to do. Plan early, and start packing early!  First, make sure you have all the typical moving and packing supplies you’ll need. Boxes, tape, cushioning material like bubble wrap, scissors, and markers are a good start. Next, come up with a packing schedule to ensure that you’re on track and not running around the night before your move trying to pack the whole house up! If you start the process with these steps, you should have a relatively stress-free move.

One of the first things to think about when you begin to plan is: what to pack first when moving. You can start this plan with what room to pack first when moving. Begin by doing an inventory of your home. Make note of all the items you want to move, and take this time to also get rid of anything you don’t need at your new home. You can throw this stuff away, donate it, or sell it in a garage sale. You can simply write this information down or create a spreadsheet and list all the categories, such as fine china, clothes, sheets, towels, toys, and more.  Once you have a good idea of the belongings and items in your home that you need to pack, you’re now ready to figure out what to pack first.

The First Few Things to Pack Up

Items Already in Storage

When you first make your packing plan, make sure to pack any items you have in storage, such as in your attic, garage, or shed. The nice thing about these belongings is that most of them are probably in some type of box or storage unit already. Get them all out, rid yourself of anything you’re not taking, and put as much as you can fit, safely and securely, into your moving boxes. When coming up with what to pack when you move, don’t forget about items that are stored away like this.

Out of Season Clothes

Just like any of your items that are in storage or already packed away in the attic, out of season clothes are probably in boxes in your closet. Make sure you pack these clothes away as efficiently as possible because you’re probably not going to be wearing them anytime soon anyway!

Rarely Used Items

Many homes contain items that are not used all the time. Fine china is a great example. Fragile items like this should be packed up first because you’ll want to make sure they’re handled with care. Clearly mark “fragile” on the box and pack them away with bubble wrap or another cushioning material.

There are so many things to think about when you’re planning a move. What to pack when moving, what to pack up first, what room to pack first, and what order to pack when moving should all be addressed. With a little patience, skill, and planning, your move should be exciting, not stressful!
